CRAYONS,
GEOLOGY
KITS
SUCCESS!
|
Teachers
and students
in Haiti often
have very little
in the way of
materials to
illustrate lessons.
Thanks to all
who collected
large crayons
for the preschool,
we met our goal
of over 100 packages!
We also have
the supplies
to prepare geology
kits and joint
activity materials.
Last year’s
microscope project
was a big hit
with teachers
and students
alike. If you
are interested
in preparing
a science kit
for a classroom,
contact Melanie
Stewart at drmel@wi.rr.com

Future
Goals:
The
long range plan
for the Jeannette
school compound
is to unify electricity
with a central
generator and
solar panels
at the Teacher’s
Dorm. A new Internet
Café will
be located there
too. To do this,
we must replace
the leaky roof
on the dorm with
a concrete roof—a
significant expense.
Another area
we hope to address
is the addition
of a second nurse
at the clinic.
She would live
in the nurse’s
residence, currently
empty, which
also needs a
new roof. These
initiatives go
beyond the capacity
of our annual
budget, but we
work and pray
that these things
can be accomplished
to help St. Marc’s
and Jeannette
continue towards
self-sustainability.
Pray with us!

Paper
Beads: from Trash
to Treasure
By Jan Byrd
Students and
teachers at St.
Marc’s
School were excited
about the possibilities
to generate income
by making jewelry
out of discarded
poster paper.
A group of college
students traveled
to Haiti last
January and organized
classes on jewelry
making: rolling
paper and dipping
into varnish
for use as "beads".
Hannah Brown,
who participated
in the trip and
jewelry seminars
left fishing
line and clasps
for necklaces
and bracelets.
Finished products
can be sold in
Haiti as well
as in the U.S.
To keep the
project going,
we need your
old posters.
If you have posters,
let us know.
We’ll arrange
to send them
to Haiti.

New Trade
School
Needs
Your
Help
By Steve
Smith
|
Basic Construction
of the first
floor of the
Trade School
was completed
last fall, 2008,
for around $36,000
-- $30,000 from
the US Oil/Schmidt
Family Foundation
and the rest
from private
contributions.
When the Trade
School is completed,
classes in cooking,
building, plumbing,
and basic Computer
Skills are envisioned.
We need your
help to complete
the trade school
-- wiring the
trade school
for electricity
and building
furniture. The
Commission on
Global Reconciliation
has granted the
Haiti Project
$6,200 from annual
Diocesan Millennium
Development funds
to provide electricity,
to build furniture,
and purchase
supplies.
We'll send a
work group to
Haiti to run
wiring from the
generator at
the Teacher’s
Dorm, Upgrade
the electric
service, and
install wiring
and fixtures
at the trade
school. This
group will also
build cutting
tables and chairs/benches.
Skilled
(and unskilled
nut eager) volunteers
are needed!
