Haitians
Rebuilding Haiti
Jeannette's trade
school classes
began June 1st.
YEAH! Over 160
people registered
[almost 1/2 women]
for 3-months
of intensive
training that
will aid Haiti's
reconstruction.
Your
$100 donation
puts one student
through training.
April
Trip to Haiti
-- by Ann Brophy
The April trip
with Co-chair
Steve Smith and
Ann Brophy and
Treasurer Christophe
Nicaise accomplished
much.
Many
meetings took
place with Pere
Gracia, priest
in charge, Institution
Director Rudolph
Eloi, and community
representatives
to collaborate
on several projects.
An
Engineer was
brought to Jeanette
to survey the
buildings for
earthquake damage.
Parents can now
allow their children
to return to
school rooms
knowing they
are safe.
The
ambitious goal
of opening the
new trade school
June 1st is now
a reality, and
we are well on
the way to wiring
the campus for
internet and
computer availability.

Ann
has posted a
wonderful

trip

a
huge parade and
celebration is
traditional in
Jacmel

- Unity is our
strength
motto at the

were born lucky,
even your rooster

New
Coordinator
The
Haiti Project
welcomes our
new coordinator:
Elizabeth van
der Weide. Out-going
coordinator,
Dr. Jan Byrd
will focus her
wonderful energy
on Medical issues
in Jeannette.

Elizabeth
(Heins) van der
Weide is a transplant
from Florida,
much happier
in warm, humid
weather, so Haiti
is a natural
draw. She is
a cradle Episcopalian,
so attending
St. Andrew’s
in Madison and
practicing a
diaconal approach
to ministry also
feels natural.
She and Dan have
been married
for one year,
and they live
in downtown Verona
with 3 kids,
2 cats and a
snake. Since
she has a PhD
in analytical
chemistry, she’s
happy in her
new ‘other’
job working in
Dan’s lab
at UW Madison,
having recently
left sales &
marketing for
a local microscopy
firm. She feels
happiest being
a connector,
linking people
and institutions
for synergistic
benefit, but
herself working
behind the scenes.
Elizabeth
feels an affinity
for Haiti, and
is persistent
in her approach
to organizing
support for the
Haiti Project
from all angles.
She likes to
say that she’s
a human BASF,
not making things,
but making things
better. Elizabeth
likes recruiting
bricks, and is
happy being the
mortar that binds
them together.
In this respect,
she is similar
to Haiti, whose
greatest strength
is the bonds
that hold the
people together,
even if they
themselves have
nothing.
