2010 Annual Convention
October 8-9, 2010, Milwaukee
Members of the Haiti Project gathered with our diocesan brothers and sisters to celebrate our faith, diocese and call to mission. It was a wonderful, exciting weekend and an incredible opportunity to tell the story of our diocese-wide relationship with the parish of St. Marc’s in Jeannette. It was also an opportunity to say “thank you” to so many people who have supported and continue to support this partnership. We had an overflowing 16’ display about our student sponsorship program, happenings in Jeannette (including before-and-after pictures of building improvements), Singing Rooster coffee, Haitian art and our plans for a clergy shirt program.
At the end of the Presiding Bishop’s plenary talk on our call to mission, Steve Smith, Co-Chair of the Steering Committee, and Elizabeth van der Weide, Project Coordinator, presented Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori and her husband Richard a gift of Haitian art and Singing Rooster coffee on behalf of the Haiti Project. On Saturday, we were privileged to have the opportunity to share our story with Bishop Jefferts Schori, when she stopped by our display during her visit to the exhibits. We even measured her for a clergy shirt! More on this later.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who stopped by. Not only does this help us support our Haiti partners, but it allows us to share in the blessings of our many gifts. And, thank you to those volunteers who gave their time and talent to set up and support the Haiti Project’s display during the convention.

2010 Haiti Connection
November 3-5, 2010, Elizabeth van der Weide and Elizabeth van Der Weide attended the 2010 Haiti Connection meeting in Miami, Florida. The Haiti Connection is a biannual meeting of individuals and organizations involved with Episcopal ministries in Haiti. This includes members of the Partnership Program, Episcopal and Development, CEDDISEC, the Presbyterian Church and other relief and mission organizations. The venue for this meeting alternates between Florida and Port-au-Prince.
The focus of this year’s meeting was on restructuring and rebuilding of the Episcopal Church in Haiti and its role in the rebuilding of Haiti post earthquake.
The meeting began with a wonderful Eucharist and a presentation by keynote speaker and Haitian economist Kesner Pharel, who spoke about the four pillars of reconstruction (as envisioned by the Haitian government), with the goal of bringing Haiti to emerging nation status by 2030. A series of lectures, workshops and conversations ensued on how to rebuild Trinity Cathedral, which was decimated, the Episcopal seminary and university and the implementation of health, education and infrastructure programs.
In-between sessions, we met with old friends and new, spent time with Pere Kesner Gracia, Paul Casey of the Colorado Haiti Project, Dave Gury and Deacon Anita Thorstad from the South Florida Haiti Project. We discussed ways to strengthen the partnerships and relationships we share and our partner communities of St. Marc’s-Jeannette, St. Mary Madeleine’s-Bondeau and St. Paul’s-Petit Trou de Nippes.

You can renew online by credit card.
You can become a NEW sponsor too --->
Hurricane Tomas Hits Leogane Hard:
Leogane is inundated. Many trees have fallen. The Hospital St. Croix is closed due to first floor flooding. The nursing school sent almost all patients home Thursday. Unfortunately, access to drinking water is even more important now.
As further updates are received, we will post updates here and on our Facebook page.
Please keep Haiti in your prayers as it continues to work towards recovery and healing. If you have questions or concerns, contact Elizabeth van der Weide elizabeth@haitiproject.org
